When visitors leave: replies by email
Unread chat replies are emailed, and email replies come back into the chat.
Visitors don't have to wait on your website for an answer. If they leave, your reply follows them by email, and when they answer that email it goes straight back into the same conversation.
How it works
- A visitor starts a chat and leaves their email address, or you already have it.
- You reply in the inbox.
- If they haven't seen your reply after about 10 minutes, it's emailed to them from your team's email address.
- They answer the email. It appears in the conversation, and in the messenger if they come back to your site.
The email shows your reply with your name and photo, and a link to continue the conversation on your website.
What you'll see in the inbox
Under your reply: Not seen · Emailed, then Email delivered once their mail server has it. If an address bounces you'll see that too, and it isn't emailed again.
Getting an email address
After a visitor's first message, the messenger offers Get notified by email. When your team is away, it asks before they write. If you pass the visitor's email in your messenger settings, it doesn't need to ask at all. See Customize the messenger.
Conversations that start by email
Those are answered by email straight away, without the 10-minute wait. See Your team's email address.
