Online and away: what visitors see

How the messenger knows someone's around, and what happens when nobody is.

Written by OngoingAIUpdated

The messenger tells visitors whether someone is around: We're online · typically reply in minutes, or We're away · we'll reply by email. It's worked out from your team's activity, so it stays honest without anyone remembering to change it.

When you count as online

  • You have OngoingAI open in a browser tab, on that workspace, and
  • you've used it in the last 10 minutes: moved the mouse, typed, or come back to the tab.

Your status is at the bottom of the sidebar, under your name: active with a green dot, or away.

Set yourself away

Click your status to switch between active and away. Away stays on, in every tab of that browser, until you click it again. Visitors see the change right away.

What visitors see while you're away

When nobody on the team is active, the messenger:

  • says No one's online right now in its greeting,
  • asks for an email address before the visitor writes, so you can reach them later,
  • and still takes their message, which waits in your inbox.

When you reply, they get it by email if they've left. See When visitors leave: replies by email.

Good to know

  • Closing your last tab counts after a short pause, so reloading the page doesn't flicker you to away.
  • Availability is per workspace: a tab open on another workspace doesn't count.
