Greet visitors with quick replies
Say hello after a few seconds, with one-tap questions that start a conversation.
Written by OngoingAIUpdated
A greeting pops up above the chat bubble after a few seconds, or once a visitor scrolls, with up to three questions they can tap. Tapping one opens a conversation that starts with your greeting and their choice already sent, so starting a chat takes one tap.
Add a greeting
Add greeting to your messenger settings:
window.intercomSettings = {
app_id: "YOUR_WIDGET_KEY",
greeting: {
text: "Hi there 👋\nWhat would you like help with?",
options: ["What does it cost?", "Can I try it?", "Talk to the team"],
delay: 6, // seconds before it appears…
scroll: 0.25, // …or once they've scrolled a quarter of the page
},
};
text: your greeting, with line breaks kept. Leave it out for "Hi there 👋 What would you like help with?".options: up to three quick replies. Leave them out for a greeting without buttons. Tapping the greeting itself opens a new conversation.delayandscroll: it appears afterdelayseconds, or once the visitor has scrolled that fraction of the page, whichever comes first.
Only on some pages
Settings are per page, so add greeting only where you want it. For example, only on your home page:
window.intercomSettings = {
app_id: "YOUR_WIDGET_KEY",
...(location.pathname === "/" && { greeting: { options: ["What is it?", "Pricing", "Talk to us"] } }),
};
When it shows
Greetings are friendly, not pushy:
- At most once per browser session.
- Never to someone who already has a conversation with you.
- Not again for a week once a visitor closes it with the ×.
- Never while the messenger is open.
When nobody on your team is online, the greeting says We'll reply by email, and the conversation asks for an email address up front. See Online and away.
